Fundraising for the Reconstruction of Wajima Lacquerware Industry in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, after the Great Earthquake
Wajima Lacquerware Industry and Commerce Cooperative Association
On January 1, 2024, the Noto Peninsula earthquake caused unprecedented damage to areas such as Wajima City, and the homes and workshops of Wajima’s raw lacquer producers were entirely or partially destroyed.
Amidst the chaos and the urgent need for basic necessities such as food, we also saw the helplessness and despair of facing the reconstruction of our lives after the disaster.
As a result, the number of workers and craftsmen who chose to leave Wajima or quit their jobs increased, and the precious lacquerware techniques nurtured in Wajima were on the verge of disappearing.
But despite such a severe situation, we believe that the lacquer craftsmen and artisans are still willing to do their best as long as there are work orders.
The Wajima Lacquerware Industry and Commerce Cooperative Association (Guild) hopes to rebuild businesses and workplaces as soon as possible during such a difficult time to preserve the spirit of the lacquer craftsmen and artisans. That is why we are launching a fundraising.
The funds raised will be used to repair members’ equipment (powder and lacquer factories for coating substrates), rebuild members’ living and working environments, purchase tools and materials, and maintain studio operations.
